Adopting

Adopting a pet is huge responsibility, this is a commitment to take care of another life for upwards of 18 years. Please make sure you are ready for this before filling out an adoption application.

Here at Puca’s Pack we work with each dog, for at least 3 weeks, before adopting them out. We take our time to find out their behaviour issues and do our best to revert those behaviours. Our certified Dog Psychology and Behaviour Modification specialist works with our dogs until we feel they are fit for a new home. Each dog gets daily exercise, mental stimulation, and lots of obedience training. We work on boundaries to insure the dogs have a good understanding of what is expected of them before they leave our home.

On the day of adoption, one of our team members will walk you through the basic training and commands we use with your new dog to insure you have the best chance for success. This day will consist of 1-6 hours (depends on the dog) of training methods used on your dog, success and failure stories, introducing the dog to your house and family, multiple structured walks, and much more. We will go our separate ways once everyone feels comfortable.

Puca’s Pack is committed to our dogs and encourage all adopters to stay in contact with us. We are here to help you work through training issues that may arise after adoption. We will do everything we can to help you and your furry friend live a happy life together.

Should the adoption not work out, we require, as per the signed Adoption Agreement, that the dog be returned Puca’s Pack. However, we do expect that anyone who adopts one of our animals is willing to work through any behaviour issues that arise (within reason). Our help and support is always available to you for the life of your dog.

A little bit about me:

Meet Jason!

I graduated with flying colours on October 10th from Dog School! I’m being fostered in Baja Mexico until I find my forever home.

I recently had the privilege of fostering Jason for two months (June and July 2023). What a sweet boy! He chills well, loves to go on walks, ride in the car, and loves everyone who comes to visit. He’ll give a couple of quick barks when he hears a noise outside that he doesn’t recognize, but doesn’t go on and on. I would’ve adopted him, if I didn’t already have three dogs back in the states. Very hard to leave him. Rick

Foster dad update: Jason and I are getting along great. He gets pretty excited sometimes (grabs and pulls on my clothes, jumps over the furniture, etc.). I didn’t want to discipline him initially, but now I stand up and say no, and walk away from him and he calms down. He usually follows me everywhere (I go looking for him if he doesn’t), and we go for a 10 minute walk in the morning (he won’t go #2 in our yard), then take him on a 45 minute to an hour walk in the evening. Great dog!

Jason is smart and fun to be around; because he's so intelligent, training is a snap for him - he masters agility or any skill easily.

Jason’s the type of dog that makes eye contact with his person (handler) and wants to please them, ie he wants to be emotionally connected with a person. He is playful and engages with other dogs but does not like it if a male tries to dominant him, that could start a fight.  Because of his strength he should be monitored closely while meeting other dogs to ensure compatibility.

He’s been going on hikes, on and off leash, with volunteers and is a great hiker. Jason would be a perfect companion for someone who likes outdoor adventures.  Jason is not the kind of dog that will run away if let off leash but rather he will frequently 'tag up' and check back in with his person.  He loves car rides.

Here is a comment from a volunteer who has hiked with Jason many times and has done some obedience training with him, "I LOVE this guy! He looks up to me for direction and guidance and I know he wants to do the right thing but has likely had very little people companionship and direction in his life up until now. The right person will be lucky to have this boy in their life. If his adopter continues his leash and obedience training and allows for plenty of exercise, they will be rewarded with a loyal and wonderful friend."

Jason completed his Dog School Training on Oct 10th 2022 as a star student,  the head trainer said he would adopt him if he didn't already have a full pack. This is a note from his trainer: "Jason is a sports dog by nature; any challenge that comes his way is not a challenge for him. He loves to play with balls and to do agility circuits. He responds to game stimuli when training him. He is a very obedient dog and is focused on tasks, he’s also a very affectionate dog with a protective instinct if given love properly."

Jason currently shares his foster home with a big pittie girlfriend.

Jason knows basic leash skill and obiedence commands like sit, down, off, wait, heel (loose leash walking) and come.

A little bit about me:

Meet Spirit!
This big, lanky, and lovable 7 1/2-month-old Great Pyrenees Kangal cross is ready to bring some puppy charm into your life! Spirit may be a large breed, but he’s as sweet as can be and doesn’t yet realize his size. With a big bark and even bigger heart, he loves hanging out with his pack and proudly guards his surroundings.

A Gentle Giant with a Playful Streak
Most days, Spirit is content to wander around, nap, and enjoy the peace of the yard. But like any puppy, he gets those adorable energy bursts where he’ll suddenly run, jump, and play like there’s no tomorrow! Watching him race around is a sight to see—he’s still learning where his big paws land and often surprises himself (and us) with his speed and impressive jumping skills. He’d be perfect for a family with a fenced yard or an adventure-loving crew who enjoys exploring the outdoors.

Furry Friend Approved!
Spirit is doing great with other dogs on the property, although he’s learning to respect their space as he grows. He also shares his home peacefully with cats! Plus, he’s shown no destructive behaviors, making him a joy to have around the house.

Happiest Outdoors
Spirit is a yard lover at heart. Rain, shine, or snow, he loves digging little holes to curl up in and enjoy the fresh air. For him, the perfect home would have a spacious yard to roam or access to exciting outdoor adventures. He can easily sleep the day away, but when it’s time to head out, he’s all in!

A Little Separation Anxiety
Spirit is still learning that it’s okay to be on his own. He doesn’t enjoy being left alone for long and may whine or pace if he feels lonely. While he’s with us at Northwest Kennels, we’re helping him get more comfortable with alone time.

Where Is Spirit Now?
Spirit is staying at Northwest Kennels for some basic training, socialization, and meet-and-greets with potential adopters. We’re working with A Voice 4 Paws to help him find a loving forever home. And his new family will have full support from us during the transition, whether it’s adoption or fostering.

Name: Max

Age: 7 months old

Breed: mix of Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, and Mastiff

A little bit about me:

Meet Max, our sweet 6-7 month old pup who’s ready to find his forever family or a foster home! Max, or “Maxie” as we sometimes call him, is a Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, and Mastiff mix. This lovable, playful boy has a lot of energy and a big heart that’s just waiting to find a family to match.

About Max:

  • Dog & People Friendly: Max is amazing with other dogs and kids, and he welcomes pets and affection from everyone he meets.

  • Commands: Max knows basic commands like sit, paw, stay, and wait, and he’s eager to learn more!

  • House Trained: Yes! Max is also trained to pee/poo on command.

  • Food Motivated: He LOVES his food and treats (especially peanut butter and dental sticks) but does need a slow feeder bowl to help him eat at a healthy pace.

  • Background: Max was rescued from a tough situation in Nunavut. When we found him, he had endured terrible neglect. Thanks to lots of love and care, he’s fully recovered and now just needs a family who will give him the affection he craves and deserves.

Max’s Ideal Home: Max would do best with a family who has time for play and affection. He would be a wonderful friend for kids and other playful dogs. Max isn’t suited for a single, busy individual or an elder; he needs a loving home with time to nurture his joyful spirit and help him grow.

A little bit about me:

Hello! My name is Kamyla! I've been in rescue way too long, I just need someone to love me! I'm currently in Baja, Mexico. But I'm ready to fly to you!!

Foster update 05/26/24  Kamyla continues to prove what a great dog she is. She's been in foster with a 84 year old woman, who adores her and refers to her as "baby girl". Kamyla likes to spend most of her time where ever her foster mom is, inside or out.  She loves when company comes over and will take all the pets you have to give.  She likes to toss her toys around and bark at passer byers, be it horses, cows or whatever. Kamyla likes going for walks and is good on leash. Kamyla has showed no interest in other dogs or animals while out on walks. There is a little Chihuahua that likes to come out for a visit when she is being walked but seems like she just wants to play. Kamyla is not out looking for trouble and prefers to keep to herself and enjoy her walk. Kamyla also loves going for car rides.

Kamyla was found wandering on the highway in the middle of nowhere. It's obvious she has had many litters of pups. Once safe and sound at the rescue Kamyla was not happy being contained or alone. She is super excited when the volunteers get her out. Kamyla enjoys going for walks and does well on leash. She likes to hang out inside being a couch potato or just hanging out in the yard.

09/11/23: Foster update: Kamyla continues to thrive. Although she is not 100% great with my other dogs, I feel she could have another dog in the home with an experienced owner. She prefers males. However, Kamyla would be great in a home as the only pet. All she wants is her person to lay on the couch with and toss a ball or toy a few times a day. She does have a silly, playful side and that has only come out since being in a foster home.

07/27/23 Foster update: I took Kamyla, aka Myla, in when she tragically injured herself by rupturing a disc which left her paralyzed in her back end. I was very leery having her because her history with other dogs was not good.  But I could not leave her in a shelter in her condition. Surgery was scheduled 6 days after her injury. Within hours after surgery she was up walking again. She spent 4 weeks resting and only allowed out on leash. This girl was so resilient, and it was amazing to be part of her recovery. Kamyla has been with us now for 2 months. The change in her has been nothing but miraculous. She is slowly becoming part of my pack of 5. She has zero aggression towards the other dogs. She is just happy to be part of the family. She really likes a couple of my dogs and even wants to play but I'm not too sure about that yet. She avoids eye contact with my female and another big male I have; but she never growls or lunges at any of them. Kamyla does spend a lot of her time behind a kiddy gate where she can see all of us and most of her time outside by herself. There are hours in the days when I leash her up and she is happy to go and do whatever I do. All the while not bothering any of the other dogs. She is learning to trust. Kamyla really deserves a home to call her own. She is very affectionate and well behaved.

Kamyla is a sweet dog. She responds well to confident, fair, and consistent leadership. She's super easy to walk on leash and we imagine she would love long walks up trails or on the beach. At this point in time, she is not eager to meet other dogs. Kamyla needs to be in a home that welcomes her as their only pet. Ideally her human companion is interested in working with Kamyla to build her confidence and trust.

A little bit about me:

Hello there, future family!

My name is Anubis, and I'm thrilled to introduce myself to you. I'm a sweet and smart boy who has recently been liberated from a life on a chain. Currently, I'm soaking up all the love and care in dog training school, and I'm eagerly awaiting my flight to join my forever family!

My journey hasn't been without its challenges. I was discovered tied up and abandoned when my previous owners parted ways, leaving me behind like an afterthought. But fear not, for those days are behind me now, and I'm embracing the joy of freedom and the thrill of learning what it truly means to be a dog.

I'm currently in foster care in Baja Mexico, enjoying the company of caring individuals who are helping me become the best version of myself. I've got a love for running around the yard and doing zoomies – it's the best feeling ever! Toys and chewies are my absolute favorites, and I can't wait to share these moments of joy with you.

Walking on a leash? No problem for me! I'm a quick learner, and I'm excited to show off my skills. Meeting new dogs? Count me in! I'm enthusiastic about making friends, though my initial energy might be a tad overwhelming for some. However, I promise it's just my way of expressing pure happiness.

In my previous neighborhood, I had a blast with the neighbors' kids. Children and I get along famously! As for my comfort zone, I'm still getting used to my new surroundings. While I don't have a foster home just yet, I've got a secured yard and kennel area on a local business's lot. It's my own little haven!

Now, let's talk about something important. I can be a bit cautious around new people, so proper introductions are a must. There's something about hats and sunglasses that makes me a bit uneasy, and I'll definitely let you know if I'm not feeling it. Oh, and there was this one incident – I bit someone who reached through the gate. I'd given cues that I wasn't comfortable, but when the person persisted, I had to let them know I meant business. Don't worry, though; it was a one-time thing, and I've never done it since.

I'm a work in progress, learning and growing each day. With the right family, patience, and understanding, I know I can become the perfect companion. If you're ready to open your heart and home to a loving, spirited dog like me, let's embark on this adventure together. I can't wait to meet you and become a cherished member of your family!

Energy level: Affectionate, Active and always ready to play

Kids: I Don't Like Kids

A little bit about me:

I am adorable but I've been waiting for over 2 years for my furever family.

Foster update: Zeus is an adorable dog. He’s goofy, smart, easily trained (with food or praise), likes to be a good boy, potty trained, and good on leash (if he knows you’re the boss). But what is so endearing about Zeus is when he cocks his head to listen to what you are saying, his expressive looks and how much he loves to cuddle. He is also compassionate. We had a friend babysit him while we were out of town. She was going through some stuff and told me that whenever she was crying, Zeus would snuggle up to her and lick her tears away. Although he is not a barker, he will alert you if someone is at the door or he hears an unrecognizable sound. Sometimes he will bark in response to our neighbor’s barking dog but will stop when told to. It’s hard for him to contain his excitement when it’s meal time, when he knows he’s going for a walk or a ride but he can settle down when you tell him to sit and stay. Zeus’ repertoire is sit, stay, out, off, shake and heal. We have taught him sit for his meals and wait until we say okay for him to start eating; to stay out of the kitchen when told to and; don’t go up the stairs until called.

Zeus is our 32nd foster dog and he is one of our favorites but we’ve had him for a long time because he doesn’t interview well. He gets excited when meeting new people and begins to do a little mouthing (never bites), which people mistake as aggression; but after a short time, he will settle down, loose interest and become the laid-back dog that he is. He would like a home with active people and a good sized, fenced in yard (for his zoomies). He is not good with small children. He gets along with most other dogs. If you are looking for a loving and protective companion, Zeus is your boy.

Application.

Please keep in mind that there may be multiple applications for a single dog and that even if your phone interview and home check (due to Covid we are asking for a video tour of your property) are successful, there is no guarantee that you will be matched with the dog you have applied for. We can always keep your application open for a future dog, if you are not accepted the first time. It can be a difficult decision for us, that we don’t take lightly.
